The Leadbetters Novice Boys Orillia Lakers took to the hardwood again this past weekend looking to build on an inspiring win over a strong Barrie Royals Team Black the previous weekend. In the first of back to back games, the Lakers tipped off against the Barrie Royals Team Blue. The Lakers opened the scoring with a quick layup and didn't look back, controlling the pace of the game throughout. The energetic Lakers players demonstrated a defensive pressure the coaches had not seen yet this season holding the Royals to only 11 points in 32 minutes of play. The Lakers netted 24 points, led by Johnny D'Agnillo with 8 points in 12 minutes of play. Luke Purdy-Stevenson was awarded player of the game for the Lakers.
Following a short 15 minute break, the Lakers then took the court to face a fresh Collingwood Trailblazers team. Led by Sam Bosco with 13 points, the Lakers controlled both ends of the court, again demonstrating their new found zeal for smothering defence. The Lakers scored 25 points and held the strong Collingwood team to just 16 points. Alex Winacott was named Lakers player of the game with a strong defensive showing.
In a touching show of support and solidarity, both the Orillia Lakers and Barrie Royals players wore pink in recognition of Lakers assistant coach Stephanie Dongelmans and Breast cancer research.
Following the spirited matches, Assistant Coach Dongelmans commented on the favourable results, "We are starting to put things together, I am impressed at the rate at which the boys are improving!" "They work hard every practice and it is showing."
The Lakers hope to continue their winning ways at the four team Peterborough tournament this coming weekend.
