FAQs

What is Orillia Youth Basketball Association (OYBA)?
The OYBA is a not for profit Corporation that provides recreational (house league) and rep (Orillia Lakers) basketball to Orillia and the surrounding communities. The OYBA is guided by its mission statement and is governed by a volunteer board of Managers.

The OYBA’s Mission Statement is to operate and provide competitive and recreational basketball programs in Orillia that teach sportsmanship that emphasize fair play and foster and promote respect for all players, officials and parents and co-operate with organizations and associations in Ontario concerned with promoting the sport of basketball.

What is the OYBA’s Rep program?
The Orillia Lakers Rep Program is geared toward male and female athletes who are committed and serious about playing competitive basketball. Our program is set up to help dedicated basketball players maximize their skills by practicing sound fundamentals and then applying those fundamentals against other competitive basketball teams from across the Province.

What is the Players' Commitment?
The player must have a love for the game, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and improve their game. The player commits to attend all practices, games and tournaments with a positive attitude. Major Atom to Junior players are also expected to complete the entire 10-week Peak Performance program that has been set up for their team.

What is the Parents' Commitment?
As Orillia Lakers Rep Basketball teams are all run by volunteers, parent participation and assistance are expected in one capacity or another. Parents must commit to getting the player to practices, games and tournaments by providing transportation (carpooling with other parents is a great help). The parent must also provide positive understanding and support to the player and his teammates. Assistance in score keeping and timing of home games may also be requested.

How many Players are in each Team?
We usually choose 12 players for the team, although a coach may choose as few as 10 or as many as 15.

What is the typical schedule of a Rep Player?
During the season, teams will practice once or twice per week for 1.5-2 hours each. Optional and/or additional practices may be scheduled based on available/extra gym permits. The number of tournaments will be determined by the coaching staff and team manager. Games may also be selectively scheduled on occasional weekdays or weekends. Your coach may also register your team for OBL (Ontario Basketball’s League), which involves travel to various venues and facilities across the GTA. The tournament season culminates with Basketball Ontario’s Provincial Championships “The Ontario Cup” in March through May depending on the age group. New to 2017-18: Major Atom to Junior players are expected to attend their team’s scheduled Peak Performance program. This program runs once a week for 10 weeks.

Who do I contact if I have any further questions?

A great place to start if you have any questions is to ask your son or daughter’s Coach or Team Manager. Other options are to review the Lakers Policy & Procedures (select the “About” tab at orillialakers) or contact a specific person on the Lakers Executive (orillialakers has a listing of these volunteers, as well as their email address).
